The Nervous System

The nervous system consists of the central nervous system (including the brain and spinal cord), the peripheral nervous system and the sensory system, including the eyes, ears, nose and tongue. Its prime function is to communicate responses between the internal and external environments.

Imbalances in this system interfere with our response to the external environment and can cause us to react negatively toward stressors. A nervous system imbalance can affect all the body systems and interfere with our overall well-being.

Korean
Ginseng
When it comes to an anti-stress herbal tonic, the first name to come to mind is    Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng). Like its cousin, Siberian ginseng, Korean ginseng is
known as an "adaptogen," (having a normalizing affect on whatever ails the body.)
But unlike Siberian ginseng, Korean ginseng has a reputation for increasing male
hormonal activity and is viewed by many to be more beneficial for aiding men than women.
The herb derives its Latin name, Panax, from the Greek goddess, Panacea, the one
who "heals all." Ancient Chinese records dating from 25 AD mention this plant as a
superior herb for increasing overall strength and endurance, and for promoting health
and well-being throughout the body.
Today, the herb is still revered for its ability to provide overall strengthening and a
feeling of enhanced well-being; however, Korean ginseng is also being recognized
for its powerful and broad therapeutic abilities.
Siberian
Ginseng
Siberian Ginseng is a popular anti-stress tonic. Unlike its cousin, Korean ginseng,
Siberian ginseng has a reputation of being ideal for both sexes.
Siberian ginseng is a member of the ginseng family, though it is of a different genus
than other popular ginsengs, including Panax Ginseng. Herbalists have classified it as
an adaptogen because of the normalizing effect it has on the body. Its name comes
from the Chinese "Jen shen," which means "man root", so named because some
roots have limb-like branches resembling arms and legs. Because the root has a
human-like shape, it is considered by Orientals to be an overall body tonic. The root
is not harvested until it is two or more years old. The older the root, the higher its
value. Older roots sometimes commands a higher price than gold. Siberian ginseng is
found in the Siberian province of Russia. Many adulterated forms of ginseng exist on
the market. Nature’s Sunshine uses only the finest ginseng root, subject to stringent
quality control measures.

Valerian Valerian derived its name from the Latin, valere, which means "to be in good health."
The valerian plant grows in damp places throughout Europe, northern Asia and
North and South America. It is well-known for its odour during drying, which is akin
to smelly socks or rotten cheese. Records of valerian use goes back more than
1,000 years as a coffee substitute for German women, a condiment in medieval
times and a perfume in the 16th century. The roots have been used for food by many
cultures. The Piute ground them to use as flour and the British used the root in
soups. Cats and other small animals are fond of the plant. In addition to its many
historical uses, modern herbalists use the root to calm the central nervous system.
